Hier soir nous sommes allé voir " L'imaginarium du Dr Parnassus " le nouveau film de Terry Gilliam.
Il nous a enchanté.
L'histoire est celle d'un pari secret passé il y a mille ans entre de Dr Parnassus et Mr Nick.
Je ne définirai pas Mr Nick comme le diable mais comme le tentateur qui sait utiliser la faille de nos plaisirs pour arriver à ses fins, dans le cas de Parnassus le jeu. Quoi qu'il en soit Parnassus gagne et devient immortel.
Hélas l'immortalité isole beaucoup et même si il a un compagnon de voyage, Percy, il sombre dans la mélancolie et l'alcool. Jusqu'au jour ou il rencontre une femme qui dont il tombe amoureux fou. Il échange alors son immortalité contre une nouvelle jeunesse afin de la séduire. Mais comme beaucoup de contrat il y a toujours une faille, l'enfant qu'aura Parnassus de cette union deviendra la propriété de Mr Nick à ses 16 ans.
Quand le film commence la date fatidique est toute proche et il ne reste plus que quelques jour à Parnassus pour trouver comment contourner la promesse faite à Mr Nick. En attendant il roule sa bosse avec sa fille, Percy et Anton essayant de vivre de son imaginarium qui se présente sous la forme d'un théâtre ambulant. Là se trouve un miroir qui une fois traversé vous emmène dans vos rêves et votre imagination grâce au pouvoir psychique de Parnassus. Hélas il attire bien peu de monde jusqu'à la venue du mystérieux Tony.
Le sujet principal de film à mon sens est la l'imagination et les créations qui en découlent et ses tourments. Pas seulement du point de vue de celui qui crée mais aussi du point de vue de celui qui regarde, écoute, ressent.
D'abord il y a cette scène superbe dans une cité perdue, que j'imagine peut être inspirée de
Shambahala ou des moines se relaient sans cesse pour ne pas perdre le fil de l'histoire sous peine que le monde s'écroule. Parnassus fait alors partie de cette congrégation. C'est là que Mr Nick vient le chercher. J'aime l'idée que ce sont les histoires, qui tiennent le monde entier. Quand Mr Nick les arrête il leur fait remarquer que rien n'arrive au monde, Parnassus lui répond " c'est que quelqu'un dans le monde raconte une histoire " évitant que la chaîne soit brisée.
Gilliam nous rappelle qu'il y 1000 ans et pendant longtemps après au-delà du fait que la tradition orale était très forte, le peu de connaissance du monde qui l'entoure faisait de l'être humain un concentré d'imagination. Aux réponses répondaient beaucoup de mystère. Le parallèle que fait Gilliam avec l'époque moderne nous fait entrevoir que l'omniscience quasi googlelesque d'aujourd'hui réduit beaucoup la fantaisie, ici dans le premier sens du terme, et l'imagination. Ainsi lorsque Parnassus et sa troupe font face à des gens le message ne passe pas. La curiosité d'antan muée par l'imaginaire de la méconnaissance qui faisait de l'humain un être plus candide a disparu.
La donne change lorsque Tony arrive. Il connaît ce monde contemporain et sait ce qu'il faut faire pour raviver l'intérêt d'un publique, il faut être hype et branché. Le résultat est somme toute assez Lynchien avec Anton travesti couché sur une montagne de pommes, le petit Percy, les masque, les damiers etc... Ainsi Tony va attirer du public, essentiellement féminin pour le grand frisson.
Un autre thème du film est le rapport entre enfants et parents. Comment protéger ses enfants alors que leurs envies ne sont pas forcément les nôtres. Parnassus a beau faire, même mentir sur son âge, sa fille rêve de sortir de la marginalité. A trop vouloir imposer finalement on ne fait qu'éloigner l'enfant de l'idéal qu'on s'était créer. A la fin Valentina sa fille a elle aussi rejoint la masse et vit heureuse mais coupée de toute fantaisie elle aussi. Certains y verront une fin joyeuse je trouve ça un peu triste.
A noté aussi que le film est le dernier de Heath Ledger. J'ai toujours beaucoup aimé Ledger. Je l'ai vu la première fois dans
Chevalier une comédie sans prétention sur le moyen-âge. Le Joker restera toujours une de ses prestation les plus mythiques. Pour le film de Gilliam il a été remplacé par trois de ses amis ( Jude Law, Collin Farrell, Johnny Depp) pour les scènes manquantes, des scènes qui se passent dans l'imaginarium permettant finalement de jouer sur le fait que l'imaginaire peut s'appliquer aux êtres et les transformer.
Pour ma part j'ai pris grand plaisir. Je ne sais pas si je peux le conseiller à tout le monde car, suivant le propos du film, je ne sais pas si tout le monde est apte à le recevoir positivement car il fait appel notre ressenti et au-delà. Si vous êtes très terre à terre passez votre chemin. Si votre âme candide voire d'enfant est encore en marche allez y...
Un mot quand même des décors et des costumes : la caravane, conçue par un roi du steampunk dont j'ai honteusement oublié le nom est une vraie merveille autant dehors que dedans. J'aime son côté sideshow et victorien.
Les costumes aussi m'ont beaucoup plus, beaucoup de brocard, de velours, et de tissus brodés. Des mélanges de matières et de couleurs , de théâtralité ( je suis assez adepte du " vêtement spectacle ) et de style.
Yesterday evening we went to see " The imaginarium of the Dr Parnassus " Terry Gilliam's new film. It enchanted us. The story is about a thousand years past secret bet betweenr of Dr Parnassus and Mr Nick.
I shall not define Mr Nick as the devil but as the tempter who knows how to use the fault of our pleasures to achieve his aim, in the case of Parnassus the game. Parnassus wins and becomes immortal. Regrettably the immortality isolates a lot and even if he has a travelling companion, Percy, he sinks into the melancholy and the alcohol. Until day or he meets a woman who of whom he falls in love. He exchanges his immortality for a new youth to seduce her. But as many contract there is always a fault, the child whom will have Parnassus of this union will become the property of Mr Nick in she's 16 years.
When the film begins the fateful date is quite close and it does not stay more than some in the daytime for Parnassus to find how to by-pass the promise made for Mr Nick. By waiting he rolls her bump with his daughter, Percy and Anton trying to live on his imaginarium which appears under the shape of a travelling theater. There is a mirror which once crossed takes you in your dreams and your imagination thanks to the psychic power of Parnassus. Regrettably it attracts not enough people, up to the coming of mysterious Tony.
The main subject of film in my opinion is the imagination and the creations which ensue from it and its agonies. Not only from the point of view of the one who creates but also from the point of view of the one who looks, listens to, feels. At first there is this magnificent scene in a lost city, which I imagine can be inspired by Shambahala where monks take turns ceaselessly not to lose the thread of an story under punishment that the world collapses. Parnassus is then a part of this congregation. It is there that Mr Nick comes to look for him. I like the idea that it is the stories, that hold the whole world. When Mr Nick stops them he points out to them that nothing arrives at the world, Parnassus answers him " it is that somebody in the world tells a story " avoiding that the chain is broken.
Gilliam reminds us that it there 1000 years and a long time later beyond the fact that the oral tradition was very strong, little of knowledge of the world which surrounds him made of the human being one concentrated by imagination. In the answers answered a lot of mystery. The parallel that makes Gilliam with modern time we made glimpse that the omniscience almost googlelified current reduces the whim, here in the first sense of the term, and the imagination a lot. So when Parnassus and his troop face people the message does not pass. The curiosity of former days changed by the imagination of the misunderstanding which made of the human being a more artless being disappeared. Gives her exchange when Tony arrives. He knows this contemporary world and knows what it is necessary to make to revive the interest of public one, it is necessary to be hype and connected. The result is on the whole enough Lynchian with disguised Anton slept on a mountain of apples, small Percy, masks them, checkerboards etc.... So Tony is going to attract public, essentially women for the big shiver.
Another subject of the film is the relationship between children and parents. How to protect his children while their envies are not necessarily ours. Parnassus may make, even lie on her age, her daughter dreams to go out of the marginality. In too much to want to impose finally we are only taking away the child of the ideal who we were to create. At the end Valentina his(her) daughter joined too the mass and lives happy but cut by any very whim. Some people will see the joyful end there I find that a little bit sad. In noted as well as the film is the last one of Heath Ledger. I always loved a lot Ledger. I saw him the first time in Knight's tale an unpretentious comedy on the Middle Ages. The Joker will always remain one of his performance the most mythical. For the film of Gilliam he was replaced by three of his friends (Jude Law, Collin Farrell, Johnny Depp) for the missing scenes, the scenes which take place in the imaginarium allowing finally to play on the fact that the imagination could transform people too.
For my part I took big pleasure. I do not know if I can advise it to everybody because, according to the comment of the film, I do not know if everybody is capable of receiving him(it) positively because he(it) appeals our felt and beyond. If you are very down-to-earth go your way. If your artless soul even of child is still on the march go there... A word all the same decorations and costumes: the caravan, conceived by king of the steampunk whose name I shamefully forgot is a true marvel so outside as inside. I like its sideshow and victorian side.
Costumes also have me much more, a lot of brocket, velvet, and of embroidered fabrics. Mixtures of materials and colors, theatricality (I am enough a follower of the " garment show) and of style. And if you liked the movie I advise you to have a look on the serie Carnival
